Job Description

We are seeking a Medical Assistant to become a part of our growing team! Full time position available at our UMASS affiliated, privately owned general orthopedic practice. Generally Monday through Thursday, 8a – 5p (Subject to change based off the needs of our patients and the practice and COVID regulations). Medical Assistants will be crossed trained to perform administrative and clinical assignments to keep the medical facility running smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Physician or PA in examination and treatment of patients
  • Patient intake including vital signs and entering information electronically
  • Prepare treatment rooms for injections
  • Assist with casts, orthopedic braces, and other DME; remove sutures, staples, and dressings
  • Answer phones, schedule appointments, verify insurance and obtain referrals/authorizations

Qualifications:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (from an accredited school) preferred, but not required

Title: Administrative Float

Role and Responsibilities:

Our Admin Float role is extremely important to the Operations of the practice. This candidate must be able to multitask, be willing to help in many departments, and be willing to be trained on many different aspects of our workflows through different departments. Primary position will be in our Phone Triage department helping to answer all incoming calls to the practice, registering and scheduling patients, answering questions, and triaging calls to other staff as indicated. This candidate will also be trained to cover the front desk as needed. Some important duties include: 

  • Administrative coverage and support in Phone Triage, Reception, Insurance Specialist office, Medical Records, and Surgical Coordination departments as needed.

  • Greet patients and visitors; perform routine check in and check out following established practices and procedures.

  • Speaks clearly, distinctly, and with a friendly, courteous tone. Uses listening skills to put callers at ease and obtains accurate, complete information. Be available to answer incoming calls and direct them to appropriate department, document in the EMR, and schedule appointments appropriately.

  • Gather all required patient demographic, insurance and clinical information needed to ensure prompt and correct disposition of patient and proper billing.

  • Book appointments for occupational therapy services for the hand therapy service.

  • Collect patient co-payment and deductible amounts and receipt patient for same.

  • Assist where necessary with chart preparation for add-on or emergent office visits and occupational therapy appointments.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • At least three years of prior medical office front end experience, preferably in a surgical practice. 

Preferred Skills

  • Basic knowledge of health insurance and managed care plans and concepts (including workers’ compensation and auto accident insurance)

  • Familiarity with computerized scheduling and telephone systems required; prior experience with electronic medical record systems (particularly EPIC) highly desirable. 

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced office environment while maintaining good judgment; ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously, to prioritize duties as required and as conditions dictate.

  • A desire to work as part of a team, with the ability to work well independently.

The ability to travel to our other office locations, on a scheduled or unscheduled basis, is required.
